Chapter Sixteen

IT WAS AFTER ONE BY the time Morgan and Anna left. I couldn’t believe we had stayed up so late on a work night.

“I’m really getting old,” I mumbled.

“Why?” Anthony asked, putting an arm around my waist as we headed back into the kitchen.

“Because I’m kicking myself for staying up late on a work night. When did I get old? Do you remember the days when you could stay up all night partying and then head to class or work still a little drunk?” I said with a laugh.

He shrugged. “Sort of. I wasn’t a big partier. I wasn’t a saint, but I wasn’t a frat guy either.”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course not. You were probably making billions while the rest of us were hitting the beer bong. It’s why you are so successful.”

“I definitely had different priorities than a lot of my friends, but I don’t think I was a total stick-in-the-mud,” he said with a laugh.

I put the leftover salads in the fridge while Anthony tossed empty bottles into the recycling bin. We worked together tidying up the kitchen, even though he had insisted it could wait until later. It couldn’t wait. I hated to leave it all for later and for him. We had developed a rhythm between us, both of us

“I’m dreading the sound of the alarm clock,” I mumbled as we started the climb upstairs.

“Don’t set it. Go in late. No one is going to say anything. You can take the morning off,” he suggested.

I shook my head. “No way. I’m not going to be taking advantage of our situation. If they all find out what’s happening between us, they’re going to know I was getting special treatment. I can’t do that. I’ll be fine. I’ll be tired, but I’ll survive. I’d rather drag my ass in there than have everyone look at me, talking behind my back about me sleeping with the boss so I could slack off. No way,” I said, shaking my head.

“No one is going to say that. Mandy says you have fit in well and everyone enjoys working with you. You’ve proven yourself,” he assured me.

We headed into his huge master bathroom, each of us using a sink to brush our teeth and get ready for bed. It had become a nightly ritual that I was comfortable with. In the beginning, I had been a little nervous, but it all seemed so natural now. I had my lotion, a toothbrush, and my makeup remover on what I had come to think of as my side of the enormous vanity.

I took off the summer dress with his help. He kissed and caressed my bare breasts before pulling the old T-shirt of his that I often slept in over my head. He was tender and gentle, brushing my hair back from my face before walking me to the bed. I loved that we could share our bodies and sleep together, without actually having sex. It was far more intimate than sex.
